It's 2016. The country is in the midst of the most divisive Presidential campaign in recent times, which has resulted in a perceived racial and economic divide in the United States of America. Issues of police brutality, gun violence, immigration, racism and terrorism are at the forefront of societal unrest.
"Wake Up" is a character-driven drama about Jessica Lindsey (in her mid-20's) a white Philadelphia R&B singer and her efforts to bring together a group of local artists (of similar age group) to perform songs at a local peace concert. Jessica decided to do the project after the death of her black boyfriend Tyrone Johnson. He was killed by police during a police car stop in Jessica's predominantly white suburban neighborhood.
Jessica enlists the help of her manager to organize the performance project. Her manager encourages her to join forces with other area artists. Jessica agrees with the idea and her manager reaches out to other management companies in the area to bring together a mix of performers that includes male, female, R&B, rap and rock artists for the performance. He rents out a rehearsal studio for them to complete five rehearsal sessions before the concert.
The group is unintentionally comprised of performers from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. They are ten talented up-and-coming Philadelphia recording artists who had known of each other, but never worked together. They were presented with the project by their individual management companies. The project was presented to each of them as an opportunity to receive local and national exposure, as the peace concert was sponsored by a local TV station and would be televised. The ten individuals make up four different acts which includes a Pop soloist, a Rap soloist, a female R&B trio (to which Jessica is member), and a four man rock band.
